مَوْتٌ

مَوْتٌ : death

#of times in Qur’an: 50

Sūra al-Anbiyāʾ 21:35

Our word today is one that needs no introduction to anyone. It’s as certain as the day we were born. Mentioned 50 times in the Qur’an in various contexts, and is probably the second most word to have more quotes penned about it, after ‘love’.

It’s been called ‘the great equalizer’ and ‘the only guaranteed thing to happen in our lives’ and yet its ‘when’ is the greatest uncertainty of all.

It fills us with dread and at the same time a false sense of security

It seems far away and distant, yet gives us so much perspective at the same time.

Allah describes it very matter of factly, and says He’s created both death and life to test which of us has the best deeds. Death is the taking away of the exam paper when the invigilator says time’s up.

Just as every soul tastes life, so must every soul taste death. Allah says in Sūra al-Anbiyā', ayah 35:

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَاىِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ وَنَبْلُوْكُمْ بِالشَّرِّ وَالْخَيْرِ فِنْتَةً، وَإلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُوْنَ.

Every soul is certain to taste death: We test you all through the bad and the good, and to Us you will all return.
