Sūra al-Anfāl 8:53

Our Qur’anic Arabic word today is one that you may already be familiar with. It’s the word for ‘blessing’ or ‘favour’: نِعْمَةٌ. It’s mentioned over 50 times in the Qur’an in various different contexts where God reminds people of the different bounties He has blessed them with, the most notable and greatest of which is His guidance.

Allah tells us repeatedly in the Qur’an to remember what He has blessed us with in order that we may:

1) use these blessings as we are supposed to rather than abuse them and reject them, as many people throughout history have done. He gives the example of Fir’awn and his people rejecting signs and messengers, reminding us that Allah does not revoke His blessings from people until and unless they turn themselves away from that blessed state:

بِأنَّ اللهَ لَمْ يَكُ مُغَيِّرًا نِّعْمَةً أَنْعَمَهَا عَلَى قَوْمٍ حَتَّى يُغَيِّرُوْا مَا بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ

That is because Allah never changes a blessing that He has bestowed on a people unless they change what is in their own souls, and Allah is all-Hearing, all-Knowing

They bring destruction upon themselves by abusing their blessings, and those same blessings then turn into curses; and

2) thank Him for those innumerable blessings, which even if we were to try to count, we would never be able to!
